Calathea Veitchiana Plant

Calathea Veitchiana is also known as Calathea Medallion. It belongs to the plant family of Marantaceae and is a native of Brazil. This plant has large leaves with intricate patterns on it making it an excellent show plant. The leaves have a combination of dark green, light green and off-white colors on the top and a dark burgundy on the underside which give a highlight to the plant. Calathea Veitchiana thrives best in moderate indirect light. Exposing it to direct sunlight can scorch its leaves and ultimately cause the plant to wither away.

When the plant is exposed to continuous bright light, it will start curling up its leaves which is an indication to change its placement. Also, it requires timely watering to grow efficiently. It is important to water it enough to keep the soil moist and to ensure that the soil is dry enough before watering again. Over watering can cause irreparable damage to the plant. Thus, it is ideal to have a pot with drainage holes to drain out excess water. Furthermore, this plant requires moderate to high humidity. If the air is not dry enough, the leaves might begin to crisp and dry out. Hence, the area around the plant should be adequately humid. Misting the plant regularly can also be of great help to maintain its moisture. Since the Calathea are sensitive plants, it is advisable to use a dilute fertilizer to make sure that it suits the plant. Also, it is better to fertilize it during its active growth period only.

Light – Requires moderate indirect light. Direct bright light can scorch its leaves.
Water – Water it once or twice a week when the soil feels dry enough.
