Monstera deliciosa plant is species of evergreen tropical vines and shrubs that are native to Central America. They are famous for their natural leaf-holes, which has led to the rise of their nickname, the swiss cheese plant. Monstera deliciosa plant likes moderate indoor temperatures of 60-85 degrees. It prefers high humidity, but it will adapt fine to dry indoor conditions. If you really feel like nurturing it, you can mist it occasionally to boost humidity—but it’s not entirely necessary. Water a Swiss cheese plant until it runs out the bottom (make sure your pot has drain holes! No plant likes wet feet!), then wait until the top few inches feel dry before watering again. Don’t overwater—that’s a common mistake with this plant. Monstera deliciosa likes its soil a little on the dry side. If you like, feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer in the summer, then stop over the winter when it’s not actively growing.
In its native environment, the Swiss cheese plant grows beneath the canopy of large trees. So, it prefers indirect sunlight or sunlight filtered by a sheer curtain. It will take some direct sunlight, but not more than a few hours per day. It’s also important not to put it in direct sunlight right away as it’s getting acclimated to your home because the leaves scorch easily. Also, in low light levels, it will not develop the characteristic leaf holes.
The Monstera is an easy-going plant and is generally pest-free. Use a well-draining garden-potting-soil-general-purpose. Mix in ingredients such as perlite to increase soil aeration as needed.
Sunlight
Thrives in bright to medium indirect light. Not suited for intense, direct sun but can be acclimated to withstand it.
Water
Water every 1-2 weeks, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light. Pro tip: Monsteras can benefit from filtered water or water left out overnight before using.
Humidity
Normal room humidity will do but prefers humid conditions if possible.
Temperature
Most houseplants prefer temps in the 65°F-85°F range (18°C-30°C). It’s best not to let it go below 60°F (15°C).
