Calathea Zebrina, also known as the Zebra Plant, belongs to the plant family of Marantaceae which is a native of Southeastern Brazil. It grows upto a height of 1 m approximately. The plant gets its name because of the stripes on its leaves which resemble the zebra stripes. Its leaves have a unique combination of dark green and light green stripes on the top with a slightly purple underside. Bright indirect light or a partially shady spot is preferable for the plant growth.
Furthermore, this plant requires generous watering during its growing season. The watering frequency can be reduced during the cold seasons. However, it is important to ensure that the top layer of the soil gets slightly dry before watering again. Underwatering can cause the leaves to curl up and get spots, whereas overwatering can rot its stems. Furthermore, it is advisable to use rain water or distilled water and avoid direct tap water while watering the plant. It is favourable to feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer twice a month during its active growth period. This plant requires a warm and humid environment to thrive well. Browning of the leaf tips or leaf dropping indicate low humidity. Misting the plant frequently will help in retaining moisture. Also, using a pebble tray or a humidifier will work great.
