Vanilla is a flowering plant belonging to the plant family of Orchidaceae. It is a long climber plant and has oblong dark green leaves. This climber also has aerial roots which attach to the object where it climbs. This plant produces creamy white, yellow or light green flowers. Further, it bears a long fruit which can take upto 4-6 weeks to mature.

Growing vanilla orchids generally requires a greenhouse or a room with controllable heat and light. Growing vanilla plant at home may not result in beans, but it is an excellent creeper plant which gives an attractive look to your home. Using a pot with adequate drainage holes is advisable. It requires a temperature of about 30°C to grow efficiently and also requires humid environment and proper air circulation. It grows well in moderate light and partial shade. Using a dilute orchid fertilizer once every two weeks will promote a healthy growth. Watering it regularly to keep the soil moist is essential. Allow the top layer of about 2-3 inches of soil to dry out before watering again. The plant needs repotting every year because it is essential to examine its roots and check for root rotting.
