Heliconias Plant are tropical plants related to bananas, cannas and gingers. There are about 100 different individual species, and most species have a large number of hybrids and cultivars, with flower styles varying significantly from the original.

Flowers range in shape, size and color depending upon the Heliconia variety. Heliconia fanciers often refer to the flower shapes as lobster claw, parrot’s beak or pleated fan.

Heliconias Plant grow from an underground system of rhizomes. Rhizomes are a type of root (the ginger that you buy in the supermarket is a piece of rhizome from the common edible ginger plant).

  1. Light: Heliconias prefer bright, indirect light. They thrive in partial shade or filtered sunlight. Protect them from intense, direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
  2. Temperature: Heliconias are tropical plants and require warm temperatures to thrive. They prefer temperatures between 70-90°F (21-32°C) during the day and above 60°F (15°C) at night. Avoid exposing them to temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as they are sensitive to cold.
  3. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plants deeply, ensuring that the water reaches the root zone. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between watering’s, as overwatering can lead to root rot.
  4. Humidity: Heliconias appreciate high humidity levels. If the air in your environment is dry, misting the leaves or placing the plant on a humidity tray filled with water and pebbles can help increase humidity levels.
  1. Soil: Plant Heliconias in well-draining soil that retains moisture. A mix of organic matter, such as peat moss or compost, and sandy soil works well. Good drainage is essential to prevent waterlogged conditions.
